Remove the background from any logo on your Mac
To make a logo transparent, remove the plain colour around it rather than asking software to find a subject. Sweepcut's cut-by-colour method does that: it reads the background colour from the image's edges, removes it, and clears the holes inside letters too. Drop in a whole brand kit and export transparent PNGs in one go.
A logo on a coloured tile, made transparent

Real Sweepcut output. The sparkle and the two stripes are cut-outs in the original design, so they're transparent too.
Subject detection looks for an object. A logo isn't one.
Preview, Photos and Finder remove backgrounds with Apple's subject detection, which looks for the main object in a photo. Sweepcut uses the same model by default. It's excellent on products, people and pets. A logo is different: flat shapes, separate pieces and text, with no single object to find.
We ran six real logos through it. On two it found no subject at all. On this one it kept the book and dropped the letters and stars:

All three are real outputs from Sweepcut's two methods. The colour cut used a tolerance of 0.06 to keep the cream pages (see hard cases). Tested on six logos on 22 October 2026.
Cutting by colour, including the holes in letters
Sweepcut samples the colour around the image's edges and removes everything close to it that's connected to the edge. That clears the background but would leave the inside of an O or an A filled in, because those pockets are cut off from the edge.
So Sweepcut also checks every enclosed pocket. If it's the background colour behind a crisp edge, like the hole in a letter, it's cleared. If it fades in softly, like a highlight on a glossy product, it's kept.

Make a logo transparent in Sweepcut
- 1
Drop in your logos
One file or a whole brand-kit folder. Logos on white, black or any plain colour all work.
- 2
Choose Colour key
Select the logos, then pick Colour key under Cut-out method. If Apple's model finds no subject, Sweepcut offers Cut by Colour itself.
- 3
Export transparent PNGs
Keep the original size, or pick a preset such as Social square. Your filenames are kept.
When a logo needs a second look
| Logo | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pale parts touching the background | Cream or light grey areas next to a white background can be removed with it | Lower the Tolerance slider. At 0.06 the cream pages above were kept, with a faint light edge |
| Logo printed on a coloured tile | The colour cut removes only what touches the edge, so the tile stays | Switch the method back to Subject, which keeps the logo and drops the tile when it's a clear object |
| Very small text | A thin trace of the old background can stay around small lettering | Start from the largest copy of the logo you have |
| White details inside the logo | Soft drawn highlights stay white. A detail that is exactly the background colour with a crisp edge is treated as a hole | Check the preview on a coloured background before exporting. On a white page it looks the same either way |
Which file to use
Transparent PNG works almost everywhere: websites, slides, Canva, documents. Sweepcut can also save transparent HEIC, AVIF or TIFF.
Sizes: Social square gives 1080 × 1080. Etsy recommends 500 × 500 for a shop logo (Etsy Help, checked on 22 october 2026.), which you can set as a custom size.
Have the original artwork? If your designer has the logo as an SVG or other vector file, use that. It has no background to remove and scales to any size.
Logos and backgrounds
Can Preview remove the background from a logo?
Sometimes. Preview's Remove Background uses Apple's subject detection, which is built for objects in photos. In our test of six logos it found no subject in two and dropped parts of a third. Preview's Instant Alpha tool can remove a colour by hand, one image at a time.
Are the holes inside letters made transparent?
Yes. When Sweepcut cuts by colour, enclosed areas that are the background colour behind a crisp edge, like the inside of an O, are cleared. Soft highlights are kept.
Can I make a whole folder of logos transparent at once?
Yes. Drop in the folder, select the logos and choose Colour key. It applies to every selected image, and each can still be switched back to Subject on its own.
Does it work on a logo with a dark or coloured background?
Yes. Sweepcut reads the background colour from the image's edges, so black, green or any plain colour works the same way as white.
Which Macs does Sweepcut run on?
Sweepcut needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later. It's built for Apple Silicon and runs more slowly on Intel Macs.
