Product image sizes for every marketplace, on one page

Every marketplace wants something slightly different: a size, background, file limit and amount of space around the product. This page puts the guidance side by side, linked to each platform's official help or guidance page and checked date. Below the table is a practical common export size, plus the exceptions to watch.

“Not stated” means the source linked in that row does not state a number; it does not mean there is no limit. For eBay, its official policy confirms the 500-pixel minimum and bans added borders, text and watermarks. Its help pages presented an anti-bot check during this review, so we have not repeated a recommended size or file cap we could not recheck. Google says its 500 × 500 minimum for all products begins 31 January 2027; current requirements vary by product category.

Official source pages reviewed 27 October 2026: Amazon Seller Central, Etsy Help, Shopify Help Center, eBay picture policy, Walmart Marketplace Learn, Google Merchant Center, WooCommerce and Poshmark. eBay's adding-pictures help page presented an anti-bot check, so this comparison uses only claims confirmed in its accessible policy.

A useful shared starting point

One square export for most shops

If you sell in several places, a practical common starting file is:

2200 × 2200 pixels, square, JPEG on pure white, with the product filling about 85% of the frame.

  • 2200 pixels matches Walmart's listed dimensions and exceeds the size recommendations or minimums shown for Amazon, Etsy, Shopify, Google Shopping and WooCommerce.
  • Square is Walmart's listed ratio and a practical common canvas for Shopify and many store themes. Etsy accepts square first photos, but its thumbnails crop to different shapes, so leave a margin around the product.
  • Pure white meets Amazon and Walmart's main-image background guidance. eBay's accessible policy doesn't specify a background colour.
  • About 85% fill matches Amazon's rule and falls within Google's 75–90% framing range.

This is a useful starting file, not a promise that one exact image works everywhere. Poshmark displays photos in a portrait frame, theme crops vary, and individual category rules still apply. Check each destination's current limits before uploading.

Keep an eye on file size: Walmart's limit is 5 MB. Etsy says images over 1 MB may not finish uploading; that is an upload warning, not a firm maximum. Choose JPEG quality that looks good and check the exported file against every destination. We could not run a fresh Sweepcut 2200 × 2200 export in this static site workspace, so we cannot promise a particular file size or quality setting.

Make a consistent batch

How to make them in Sweepcut

Use a marketplace preset when its standard size fits, or enter a custom canvas and check the framing before export.

  1. 1

    Add product photos

Drop in a folder of product photos. Sweepcut processes the images on your Mac and keeps their filenames.

  2. 2

Choose a preset or custom size

Use Etsy listing, Amazon main image, Shopify product or eBay listing. For the shared 2200 × 2200 canvas, choose Custom and enter those dimensions. Check the product framing in the app; the preset-to-Custom carry-over was not tested for this guide.

  3. 3

    Choose background and format

Choose White and JPEG for the common product photo. Etsy does not support transparency, and Amazon and Walmart require white backgrounds for main images.

  4. 4

    Review and export

Check framing, any upscaling labels and each destination's file-size limit. Exports go into a Cutouts folder.

PresetCanvasPadding per sideApproximate product fill
Etsy listing2000 × 2000 px4%92%
Amazon main image1600 × 1600 px7.5%85%
Shopify product2048 × 2048 px4%92%
eBay listing1600 × 1600 px3%94%

Fill figures are calculated as 100% minus padding on both sides. Google recommends 75–90% fill. The Etsy, Shopify and eBay presets exceed that range, so adjust padding and inspect the result if you use them for Google. See all Sweepcut export presets and the folder batch workflow.

Sweepcut's preset dimensions and padding figures are based on the project's documented preset values. The Amazon-to-Custom 7.5% padding transition and a fresh 2200 × 2200 JPEG export were not testable in this static website workspace; inspect the Custom settings and resulting files in the app.

Resolution matters

Making an image bigger doesn't add detail

Resizing a 600-pixel photo to 2000 pixels creates a larger file, not a sharper picture. Amazon says not to artificially enlarge small images, and Etsy warns that enlarging can make them pixelated. Start with a higher-resolution original or reshoot when possible.

Sweepcut labels images it has to enlarge with an upscaling factor, such as “upscaled 2.5×”. Shrinking a larger image is usually a better option, but review the final export at full size.

Before upload

Background can matter as much as size

Amazon and Walmart require pure or seamless white for main images. Etsy displays transparent areas as black. eBay's accessible policy does not state a background-colour rule. If your source is on a table, sheet or grey backdrop, the right pixel dimensions won't fix the background. See how to put product photos on a white background.

Need a transparent file for a destination that supports it? Read the transparent PNG guide. Etsy is an exception: its help page says transparent PNG areas appear black.

Questions

Product image size questions

What is the best size for product images?

A 2200 × 2200 square is a useful common starting size for Amazon, Etsy, Shopify, Walmart, Google Shopping and WooCommerce. It is not a guarantee for every marketplace: Poshmark displays portrait crops, and each destination has its own framing and file-size rules. Use the platform's own preset or rules when selling on one platform.

What size should Amazon product images be?

Amazon accepts images from 500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest side and says 1,000 or more enables zoom. Its main image needs a pure white background, with the product filling 85% of the image. Amazon says not to artificially enlarge small images.

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends listing images at least 2000 pixels wide and tall. The first image should be at least 635 pixels wide and tall to avoid showing up lower in searches. Etsy warns that images over 1 MB may not finish uploading, and transparent PNG areas appear black.

What size should WooCommerce product images be?

WooCommerce recommends uploading images of at least 800 × 800 pixels. Your theme controls the sizes displayed and may override the default image widths. You can usually adjust them under Appearance, Customize, WooCommerce, Product Images.

What size should Walmart product images be?

Walmart Marketplace (US) lists 2200 × 2200 pixels and requires 1500 × 1500 pixels for zoom. Its guidance says files must be 5 MB or less and main images should use seamless white.

Should product images be square?

Square is a practical common format for Walmart, Shopify and many store grids, but it is not universal. Poshmark frames listing photos in portrait at a 3:4 ratio; leave room around the product or prepare a portrait cover image.

Can I make a small photo bigger to meet a minimum?

Resizing adds pixels, not captured detail. Amazon says not to artificially enlarge small images, and Etsy warns that enlarging can make them pixelated. Start with a larger original or reshoot when possible.
