How to remove a background in GIMP on Mac
GIMP is a free image editor for Mac, Windows and Linux. Its background-removal tools are manual or colour-based, rather than one-click subject detection. Choose Foreground Select for a photo, Fuzzy Select for a plain colour, or Color to Alpha for a background colour such as white. These steps use GIMP 3.2.6, the current stable release listed by GIMP.
Add an alpha channel for transparency
Before deleting a background, select the image layer and choose Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel. The alpha channel lets the layer become transparent; without it, deleting pixels can leave a solid background colour. If the command is unavailable, that layer already has an alpha channel. GIMP shows layers without one in bold in the Layers panel. See the GIMP 3.2 Add Alpha Channel manual.
Foreground Select for people, products and pets
Use this when the subject is distinct from its background and you want GIMP to estimate the edge from your outline and brush marks.
- 1
Outline the subject
Choose Tools > Selection Tools > Foreground Select. Draw a loose outline around the subject, including a little background. Close the outline by clicking its starting point, then press Enter.
- 2
Mark what to keep
Paint a stroke across the subject, covering its main colours without painting the background. Toggle Preview mask (or press Enter) and add marks if needed. Use Draw background mode to mark areas to remove.
- 3
Remove the background
Click Select to finish the foreground selection. Choose Select > Invert, then press Delete to clear the background.
GIMP warns that Foreground Select can use a lot of memory and may slow down or crash on large images. Its manual suggests Matting Global as a less accurate alternative to Matting Levin. GIMP 3.2 Foreground Select manual · Invert selection manual.
Fuzzy Select for one connected colour
- Make sure the layer has an alpha channel.
- Choose Tools > Selection Tools > Fuzzy Select, or press U, then click a background area.
- Adjust how much is selected by dragging right or down to increase the threshold, or left or up to reduce it. Check that the selection reaches the background without spilling into the subject.
- Press Delete. If separate background areas remain, select each area and delete it too.
Fuzzy Select grows from the pixel you click into nearby pixels with similar colours. It works best when the background is mostly one colour and touches itself; a higher threshold can jump across small gaps or include more of the subject. GIMP 3.2 Fuzzy Select manual.
Color to Alpha for a white or flat-colour background
- Add an alpha channel if the layer does not already have one.
- Choose Colors > Color to Alpha.
- Choose the background colour (often white) using the colour control or eyedropper. Preview the result, then adjust the transparency and opacity thresholds before applying.
Color to Alpha works on the active layer and makes pixels closer to the chosen colour more transparent, preserving some edge blending. It can affect matching details inside the subject too: white letters, eyes or highlights may become partly or fully transparent. For logos with white details, use Fuzzy Select on the edge-connected background instead, then inspect the result.

Export the cut-out as a transparent PNG
- Choose File > Export As.
- Enter a filename ending in .png, choose where to save it, and click Export.
- Keep the original project as an .xcf file with File > Save if you want to continue editing it in GIMP.
Exporting to PNG keeps transparency. GIMP's native XCF format is for retaining editable project information; use Export As for a file to open in other apps. JPEG does not support transparency. GIMP 3.2 Export As manual · Saving and exporting images · Saving images with transparency.
Can GIMP remove backgrounds from a folder?
The three methods above need your input to identify a subject or background. The community plug-in Batcher is described by its maintainer as a GIMP 3 batch-processing plug-in. It can apply configured actions, including installed filters and plug-ins, and export images. That does not guarantee an accurate, different subject selection for each photo; review results when the images or backgrounds vary.
For one photo with automatic subject detection, use Preview on Mac. For a folder where you want automatic cut-outs without manually selecting every image, Sweepcut processes images on your Mac and costs $19 once. Read the batch and offline guide for its folder workflow, recovery states and export options. GIMP remains useful for painting, retouching and working with layers. For other free and paid Mac options, see the background remover comparison.

GIMP background questions
How do I remove a background in GIMP?
Add an alpha channel. Use Foreground Select to mark a photo's subject, or Fuzzy Select to select a plain background, then invert the selection if needed and press Delete. Export as PNG to keep transparency.
How do I remove a white background in GIMP?
Use Colors > Color to Alpha and choose white, or use Fuzzy Select to select the white background and delete it. Color to Alpha can also make white details in the subject transparent, so Fuzzy Select is more selective for logos with white parts.
Why does the background turn white or black when I delete it?
The active layer may not have an alpha channel. Choose Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel, then delete the selected background again.
Does GIMP automatically detect a photo's subject?
The GIMP 3.2 manual describes Foreground Select as a tool where you outline and mark the foreground, and Fuzzy Select as a color-similarity selection. These methods need your input; for a one-photo automatic cut-out on Mac, Preview has Remove Background.
Is GIMP free on Mac?
Yes. GIMP is free to download. GIMP 3.2.6 is the current stable release listed on its download page, with builds for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 11 Big Sur or later.
How do I export a transparent PNG in GIMP?
Choose File > Export As, enter a filename ending in .png, and export. Use Save for GIMP's editable XCF project, not for the PNG.
