How to remove a background in Photoshop on a Mac
Photoshop can remove a background in a few steps. This guide covers a single photo, a white background, transparent PNG export and processing a folder with Actions. If you only need clean cut-outs from a folder, Sweepcut offers a separate Mac workflow: add the folder, choose the output and export. It costs $19 once.
Remove a background in Photoshop
- 1
Select the image layer
Open the photo and select its image layer in the Layers panel.
- 2
Run Remove Background
In the Discover panel, choose Browse, then Quick Actions, then Remove Background.
- 3
Review and refine the mask
Check the edges. If needed, paint on the layer mask: black hides, white reveals.
- 4
Export a transparent PNG
Choose File > Export > Export As, select PNG and keep Transparency enabled.
Adobe documents the current Remove Background route in Remove background in your images and the PNG options in Export As settings. Checked 27 October 2026. Photoshop menus can change between versions.
Remove a white background in Photoshop
For a photo: use Remove Background, then check the cut-out against a contrasting colour. A white background can be hard to distinguish from a white subject, so inspect edges and small details before saving.
For a logo or flat graphic: a subject cut-out can miss separate letters or shapes. Use Select > Color Range, sample the white, and adjust Fuzziness to include more or less of the similar shades. Refine the selection, then hide the selected background with a mask or delete it. Keep an original copy before deleting pixels.
Adobe's Color Range help documents sampling and Fuzziness. For a logo-specific example, see how to remove a background from a logo. For putting a product cut-out on solid white, follow the white background photo guide.
Batch background removal with Photoshop Actions
Photoshop's Batch command can run an Action across files in a folder. You build the Action and choose its input and save settings.
- Record an Action. In the Actions panel, create and record an Action. Work through Remove Background on one sample image, then include the export or save steps you need.
- Open Batch. Choose File > Automate > Batch, select the Action and set Source to Folder. Choose a separate destination for the output.
- Test before the full run. Run the Action on a copy of one image and confirm the cut-out, filename and export. Then run a small sample folder before processing the originals.
Adobe documents the Action and folder controls in Batch-process files in Photoshop (checked 27 October 2026). Background removal is part of the Action you record; test its playback in your Photoshop version rather than assuming the recorded result will suit every image. For a folder workflow without building an Action, see Sweepcut's batch background remover guide.
Photoshop for edits. Sweepcut for folder output.
Photoshop offers a flexible mask for hands-on work. Sweepcut is a focused alternative when the job is to cut out and export many product photos with consistent settings.

|---|---|---|
| One image | Remove Background, then refine the mask and export | Add an image, choose settings and export |
